Many gem carvers are self-taught. Some began with faceting.
Others came to carving through sculpture or painting. Gem
carvers tend to begin as artists; faceters often have a mechanical/technical
trade background. An amalgam of engineering/tool know-how
and an artist’s practiced eye for color and form create
a balanced and arresting result.
Lapidary
Journal features articles by gem carvers. Web searches
for lapidary and gem sites offer sources. Rock clubs list
workshops. A few universities and colleges include faceting
courses.
Outstanding carving instruction can be found in Henry Hunt’s
books, which are revered by American gem carvers for their
thorough and generous contribution to this field.
